From May 22nd to 25th, 2017, 22 scholarship holders from Eastern Europe, the Middle East and India met at the Ludgerus monastery in Helmstedt for a seminar on Eastern and Western Christian Spirituality. The seminar was led by Markus Leimbach, Head of the Eastern Europe Department and one of the Spiritual Counselors of KAAD, Prof. Dr. Ulrich Engel OP.
The thematic introduction of Dr. Johannes Oeldemann, Director at the Johann-Adam-Möhler Institute for Ecumenics in Paderborn, gave an excellent overview of the development and background of the individual Orthodox and Unified Churches, followed by an analysis of the ecumenical dialogue among the churches. Subsequently, the seminar participants presented “their churches” by means of guiding questions and gave an insight into the Roman Catholic Church in Poland, the Unified Greek Catholic Church in Macedonia, the Orthodox Church in Ukraine as well as the Armenian-Apostolic Church. Finally, the situation of the Melkite Church in Syria was discussed, a church that still uses Aramaic, the language of Jesus.
