The world is characterised by a multitude of armed conflicts. In Central and Eastern Europe, the war in Ukraine and the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan have had a wide range of effects on the political and social situation in the region. People are concerned about how they personally deal with the war: Which side am I on? Are the wars justified? Should weapons from my country be supplied to the warring parties? How can peace be achieved and how can the nations that are now fighting each other deal with each other in the future?

This seminar will deal with the questions of the meaning of “peace” and “just peace” (as a counter-design to “just war”) and deal with current discourses on peace ethics. The significance of power, domination and violence will also be discussed in this context. Philosophical and political science approaches to peace ethics will be discussed and categorised, as well as theological perspectives, such as those set out in the publication “A Just Peace” by the German Bishops' Conference, in the statements of the international Catholic peace movement pax christi or the declarations of the European Justitia et Pax commissions.

The aim of the seminar is to familiarise participants with peace ethical perspectives, to become aware of their own attitude towards violent conflicts and their causes and to develop options for their own actions.
