“Pilgrims of hope": Encounter with the Universal Church in the Holy Year. Study and pilgrimage to Rome

Rome | 31.08.2025 - 06.09.2025
Manger:Father Professor Ulrich Engel OP
Father Professor Thomas Eggensperger OP

The “Rome Trip” has the dual character of a pilgrimage and a study trip. In the two-thousand-year-old tradition of pilgrimages to the tomb of St Peter, our journey will take us to the sources of the Christian faith and to the centre of the universal church. Prayer and worship in the catacombs, in Santa Sabina and with the Community of Sant' Egidio are part of the programme.

Of course, we will also take part in the Pope's audience. Pope Francis has proclaimed a “Holy Year” for 2025. The “annus sanctus” as it is called in Latin has the motto “Pilgrims of Hope” to enable reflection and renewal in times of war and global crises.

In addition to an extensive tour of the Vatican with St Peter's Basilica, the Sistine Chapel and its museums, the history of the city as a reflection of Western history and church history will be explored on tours over the course of the week, starting with the ancient cosmopolitan city of Rome (Roman Forum, Capitol, Colosseum and the harbour city of Ostia). The stay in Rome will be deepened by meetings with various people in positions of responsibility in the Vatican, international diplomacy and other universal church actors. The visits and discussions will provide exciting insights into the universal church behind the scenes of the “Eternal City”.
