The media shape how we perceive politics – and politics influence how the media work. Artificial intelligence, social networks and new communication strategies are fundamentally changing this interplay.
The seminar is dedicated to the challenges and opportunities that arise in this field of tension and sharpens the focus on critical thinking when dealing with information. Topics covered in the seminar include how the field of work of media professionals is changing: From traditional newsrooms to digitally networked production environments – what role does AI play in research, reporting and editorial processes? Another topic is the connection between politics and the media: How is communication between political actors changing? What new strategies have emerged in dealing with the media and what impact do they have on transparency and democratic processes? An important question that also arises is the role of social media: platforms such as X, TikTok and Instagram are now political arenas. We will shed light on their potential for participation and diversity of opinion, but also on risks such as fake news, manipulation and filter bubbles.
In addition to academic input, practical discussions with media professionals and political actors are planned with the aim of better understanding media and political mechanisms and strengthening our own ability to think critically in times of artificial intelligence. In addition to the input and practical discussions, we will go on short excursions to places of media and politics in Berlin, where the seminar will be held.
The seminar is being held in cooperation with the Federal Association of Catholic Churches at Universities and brings together international KAAD scholars with German students from the university communities.
