The KAAD’s Middle East Division is active in a region of extraordinary cultural, religious, and historical diversity, which is at the same time marked by profound political, social, and environmental upheavals. Wars, violent conflicts, displacement and migration, economic uncertainties, and the consequences of climate change pose major challenges to societies. At the same time, the region is a significant hub of religious traditions, scientific innovation, and vibrant civil society initiatives. Since the establishment of the Regional Office, KAAD’s funding activities have focused on priority countries where long-term partnerships with universities as well as church and civil society institutions exist. Together with local partner organizations and alumni, KAAD supports students and researchers beyond the actual funding period, strengthens academic exchange, and builds sustainable networks in the region.
