The small town of Taizé in Burgundy is home to an ecumenical brotherhood (communauté) with members from all over the world. But Taizé is much more than a monastery: for decades it has been an international meeting place for young people seeking community, spirituality and exchange. The Taizé Community, founded by Brother Roger, sees itself as a place of prayer, simplicity and encounter, where bridges are built between people of different cultures and denominations.
Every year, tens of thousands of teenagers and young adults travel there to take part in days of prayer and song. Important elements of the stay are the internationally mixed discussion groups, in which Bible texts, personal experiences, social issues and the challenges in the respective countries of origin are discussed. Brothers of the community give daily introductions to biblical texts, supplemented by workshops on topics such as peace, justice, the integrity of creation and intercultural dialog. Practical work – such as doing the dishes or serving meals - also strengthens the sense of community and makes it clear that everyone bears responsibility.
A special aspect of Taizé is the invitation to silence – in the services of the Église de la Réconciliation, on walks through the countryside or in personal prayer.
The "pilgrimage of trust on earth" proclaimed by the brothers in Taizé is not a physical route, but a spiritual path of dialog that promotes trust, peace and reconciliation.
For young adults from all over the world, Taizé opens up valuable learning and meeting spaces in which they experience international understanding and interculturality in a concrete way. These encounters give rise to a feeling of cohesion and mutual support that transcends national borders.
