University education in Lebanon is caught between profound social, political and economic challenges – both within the country itself and in the Middle East region. In relation to its population, the country has a remarkably high density of higher education institutions: 48 officially recognized universities and university institutions for a population of 5.5 million. These figures illustrate the central importance of academic qualifications and research in Lebanon.
Lebanon is characterized by a pronounced religious, cultural and ethnic diversity, which is directly reflected in the higher education landscape: Universities here are not only places of knowledge transfer, but also of social interaction, interreligious and intercultural exchange and the promotion of civil society skills. At the same time, many universities are supported by large religious groups, such as various Christian churches and Muslim communities. This not only illustrates the social fragmentation in Lebanon, but also contributes to its consolidation. At the same time, Lebanese universities represent important spaces of identity preservation for religious communities in neighboring countries, especially in Syria.
Universities in Lebanon are currently under considerable pressure: political instability, economic and growing social hardship are leading to a continuous shortage of material resources. For universities, this means decreasing planning security and growing difficulties in maintaining quality and equal opportunities. Young people's access to academic education is becoming increasingly difficult. The situation is exacerbated by increased migration and refugee movements: The ongoing brain drain is depriving the country of qualified specialists, putting a strain on the education system and weakening civil society.
The alumni seminar takes up these lines of development and reflects on the current situation of higher education in Lebanon. It focuses on the challenges and potentials that are opening up for overall social and regional development.
