Dr Diep Anh Tran

After completing his bachelor's degree in tectonic and mineralogical geology at the National University of Vietnam in 2008, Diep Anh Tran was able to contribute his acquired knowledge to numerous research projects at the Vietnam Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources (VIGMR). After a stay at the Korean Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources (KIGAM), he was accepted as a researcher in the KaWaTech-Solutions project (Vietnamese-German co-operation for the development of sustainable technologies for karst water management) funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. This project focuses on the development and implementation of sustainable technologies for water supply in the karst regions of northern Vietnam, specifically the Dong Van Karst Plateau, a global geopark designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010.

In spring 2019, Diep Anh began his KAAD-funded doctorate on "Karstification and hydrogeology of the Na De spring catchment area (Vietnam) for sustainable groundwater resource management" at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and completed it with "summa cum laude" in 2022 despite the difficulties caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Diep Anh immediately returned to Vietnam and resumed his work as a researcher at the VIGMR. He is now contributing his expertise in geology and karst water management to teaching and research in this field, which is important for Vietnam.

The supply of clean groundwater is of paramount importance in the mountainous province of Hoa Binh in northern Vietnam, which is often inhabited by ethnic minorities. Diep Anh 's work is helping to develop technical solutions to provide decentralised access to drinking water for the local and comparable regions - including even small villages. These access points are designed in such a way that they can be easily maintained by local staff and thus sustainably improve the situation in remote regions.
