KAAD's Priority Countries in the Middle East

With the establishment of the Middle East Division in 1994, KAAD has built sustainable cooperation structures in its priority countries in collaboration with local partners and returning alumni. These include alumni networks, partner committees, and university partnerships.

Alumni Networks

KAAD’s alumni associations are formed in the priority countries from the network of alumnae and alumni. They may take the form of registered associations or operate as informal groups. Members meet regularly and serve as points of contact for scholarship recipients and, often, for prospective students and applicants. They maintain active communication with the partner committee and stay in touch with partner universities.
Beyond individual countries, alumnae and alumni also network around thematic areas such as psychology, water management, and interreligious dialogue. Partner Committees
The partner committees are established by KAAD, and members are appointed for a five-year term. They contribute their local expertise to the selection and evaluation process for applications. In addition, they actively network on behalf of KAAD at their universities, institutions, and within their communities. The members of the partner committees are generally KAAD alumnae and alumni.

University Partnerships

University partnerships are the result of many years of networking and support efforts in the priority countries. For KAAD, the partner universities serve as key institutions for building networks in these countries. Through these institutions, KAAD awards Sur Place and third-country scholarships. The goal of university partnerships is to support talented students who are socially and civically engaged, both in their studies and in their personal development. These partnerships also strengthen the universities and consolidate the KAAD network at the universities and in their surrounding communities. At the partner universities, members of the local partner committee serve as KAAD ambassadors. To date, KAAD has established partnerships with three universities in the Near and Middle East: Bethlehem University (BU) in Bethlehem, Palestinian Territories; Notre Dame University – Louaize (NDU) in Zouk Mosbeh, Lebanon, and with the Université Saint-Joseph (USJ) in Beirut, Lebanon. In addition to these university partnerships, KAAD collaborates with local universities on individual scholarship and funding projects, for example with the German-Jordanian University (GJU) in Amman, Jordan, or with Mutah University (MU) in Karak, Jordan.

Funding Objectives

Through this holistic approach, KAAD helps to combine academic excellence with social responsibility and to support committed individuals who serve as advocates for peace, dialogue, and sustainable development.
