Doctoral studies in Germany are characterized by distinctive features that are unique in an international context. One example is the specific relationship between advisors and doctoral candidates, which is traditionally reflected in the terms “Doktorvater” and “Doktormutter.”
The doctoral period is also, for a variety of reasons, a special phase that can present doctoral candidates with certain challenges, regardless of their background. International doctoral candidates are often confronted with additional questions arising from differing cultural and institutional contexts.
This workshop aims, on the one hand, to provide participants with an introduction to the history and structure of the German doctoral system – and thus to the history of German academia – and, on the other hand, to create a space for sharing their own experiences with pursuing a doctorate in Germany. Topics will include potential challenges during the doctoral phase, as well as the rights of doctoral candidates and resources to turn to in the event of conflicts or difficulties.
