Middle East Division – Our Program

The KAAD Regional Program for the Middle East is primarily aimed at Christians. In the spirit of genuine social and interfaith dialogue, non-Christian students may also apply for a KAAD scholarship and be accepted into the program. Funding is provided to change agents who build bridges between different groups, contribute their academic expertise in their home countries, and – as change agents – help shape local development processes, engage in the advancement of higher education, establish partnerships, and assume leadership roles in academia, the church, and society.

This commitment unfolds in three areas: First, KAAD promotes academic training, research, and academic cooperation at universities through scholarships, events, and projects. Second, it supports Christian churches and their congregations. Third, it strengthens interfaith dialogue at the local, regional, and international levels. In terms of content, the funding is geared toward the major challenges facing the Middle East. Therefore, the following topics are among the funding priorities: peace and the common good, global health, the preservation of cultural heritage, as well as issues related to socio-ecological transformation and equitable economic development.

To implement this approach, the Middle East Division works closely – beyond the scholarship program – with alumnae and alumni as well as with KAAD partner committees and organizations. For example, the partner organizations are involved in the selection of scholars and play a key role in networking efforts on the ground.
