KAAD congratulates Fr Dr Carlos Ignacio Man Ching SJ on his appointment as Rector of the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador. His professional career combines academic work, pastoral responsibility and international networking - and illustrates in a special way the impact of our alumni in their home countries.

Born in Guayaquil, Ecuador, in 1968, Carlos Ignacio Man Ching grew up in a society characterized by great social challenges. His entry into the Society of Jesus combined a spiritual vocation with an educational path that took him through several countries in Latin America and Europe. His aim was always to bring together theological, psychological and biological perspectives in research and teaching.

His studies took him to Buenos Aires, Santiago de Chile, Rome and Munich. It was at the Gregorian University in Rome that he first dealt intensively with the topic of sexual abuse in the church – a debate that had a significant influence on his future thinking. His doctorate at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, funded by a scholarship from the KAAD and the German Province of the Society of Jesus, was dedicated to the prevention of sexual abuse. The focus was on the question of how children and young people can be effectively protected from abuse and how existing structures can be designed in such a way that trust is restored.

After returning to Ecuador in 2016, he took on responsibility first as a professor and later as dean at the Faculty of Philosophical and Theological Sciences of the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador (Spanish: Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador, PUCE). There, he initiated the world's first master's degree program on the prevention of sexual abuse in Spanish. He designed programs on pastoral practice, ethics and spirituality and profiled the PUCE as a place of interdisciplinary and value-oriented education. He is also a formative voice in the international debate on synodal processes, for example as the initiator of a KAAD alumni seminar on synodality or as an advisor to the Colombian and Bolivian Bishops' Conferences.

With his appointment as Rector of the PUCE, Fr Carlos is assuming responsibility for one of the country's leading universities. His path shows how education, research and lived faith can serve a more just society – and how KAAD alumni have a lasting impact worldwide.

Several small groups of young men are working together in a bright seminar room. Fr. Carlos leans over a table and explains something to two participants. Laptops, exercise books and rucksacks are lying on the tables; the atmosphere is focused and conducive to dialog.
P. Carlos with three young nuns, Fr. Carlos wears an academic habit. They are all smiling at the camera. Two of the nuns wear black gowns and hold their degree certificates in their hands. In the background, a portrait of the Virgin Mary hangs on the wood-paneled wall.
A group of about ten young men and women in dark clothing stand in a church with tall, colorfully decorated stained glass windows. Fr. Carlos speaks to them and gesticulates. In front of them is a large open choir book with sheet music and ornate initials.
