Our Alumni

KAAD’s former scholars form a vibrant and ever-growing network across Latin America. In addition to nationally organized alumni groups, recent years have seen the emergence of transnational thematic working groups. These communities thrive on intensive academic exchange and collaborate on joint projects of high societal relevance.

Global Health

The alumni group “Global Health” emerged from an interdisciplinary seminar of public health professionals and physicians held in 2015 in Santa Fe, Argentina. Since then, it has expanded through numerous virtual and in-person meetings, including international seminars in Ribeirão Preto, Brazil (2019), and again in Santa Fe (2021).

The group has initiated several transnational research collaborations, university-based projects, and joint publications. Its work focuses on structural issues in global health, public healthcare systems, and ethical challenges in medical care settings.

Justicia y Paz (Justice and Peace)

The working group “Justicia y Paz” grew out of the KAAD International Academy titled “Peace, Reconciliation and Transitional Justice”, held in Bogotá, Colombia, in 2016. Shortly thereafter, the group published a conference volume and has since refined its academic and professional profile.
Notable milestones include its co-organization of the 2019 International Academy in Lima, Peru, under the theme “The Catholic Concept of Development in Latin America Today”, as well as a number of scholarly publications – some in collaboration with faculty from Latin American and German universities.

Integral Ecology

The most recent international working group is called “Integral Ecology”, drawing inspiration from the encyclical “Laudato Si’” by Pope Francis. The group embraces a holistic understanding of ecology – one that integrates environmental and climate concerns with social justice, cultural identity, economic sustainability, and spiritual responsibility.
Since its founding, the group has hosted regional workshops, launched digital discussion series, and produced academic contributions addressing topics such as ecological transformation, indigenous environmental ethics, and sustainable development from a Latin American perspective.
